HST.973/15.124 EvaluatingThis course will involve critical analysis of new business ideas. The course format will first be for inventors or principals of early stage companies to present their ideas to the class and provide background material including scientific papers and patents. A team of students will be assigned to evaluate each business idea. The students will develop and present a series of analyses concerning the critical issues that each business idea may face. The goal of the analyses is to answer the question: Is there a viable business proposition here? If yes, why and what is your level of enthusiasm for this business? If no, is there a modification to the business that could change your answer to yes or enthusiastic yes? In addition the course will host a series of speakers who will address specific relevant topics.

HST.979/15.123 DynamicsTraditional businesses often start from a novel technology or solution and attempt to shoehorn it into a market. Because the need is neither clear nor compelling, the result is often a fundamentally weak business. In this class, teams of students evaluate a clinical need and learn an effective process for turning this need into a business. Topics in the course include alternative solutions, intellectual property protection, market opportunity, regulatory and reimbursement hurdles, competitive threats and potential return on investment. Students are encouraged to interview key individuals including clinicians, potential customers, other stakeholders, consultants and competitors. Students will also have the opportunity to shadow physicians in a clinical setting. Students will present a series of analyses and solutions to each of the critical issues faced in constructing a business to address the identified need.
